Creating Inclusive Work Environments:
Racial Microaggressions and Sense of Belonging
featuring Ruby Mendenhall, PhD Kathryn Lee Baynes Dallenbach Professorship in Liberal Arts and Sciences University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
Structural inequalities in the U.S. are associated with higher rates of multigenerational poverty, unemployment, educational challenges, and health disparities. Many organizations are seeking to address these inequalities through diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. These initiatives are often well meaning; however, people of color (and other marginalized groups) often continue to experience discrimination and feelings of exclusion.
This presentation will discuss one aspect of discrimination known as "racial microaggressions." Participants will learn how to identify racial microaggressions in the workplace and how they negatively affect co-workers and clients. They will also learn strategies that foster inclusion and understanding the importance of bias-free language, while engaging in critical thinking and hands-on activities using microaggression scenarios.
Dr. Mendenhall is a distinguished professor, author, and speaker. In her PhD dissertation, Mendenhall examined the role of neighborhoods and networks on the long-run effects on neighborhood conditions, resources, and economic independence.
